This place is amazing. My brother went to Serenity Point Recovery 8 months ago and it saved his life. My brother has struggled with addiction for 20 years. He’s 10 years older than me and I wasn’t aware of his addiction or what it was doing to him for a long time. By the time I actually understood what an addict was and that he was one, he had already moved out of the house. For a long time, I didn’t see him that much. He’d stop by the house trying to get money but he was never allowed to stay for any length of time unless he was sober. A few years ago, he had gone to some rehab and was staying at the house after he finished the program. He always stayed at the house when he would come home from rehab but usually he left pretty soon after. 5 years ago though, he stayed sober for a year and was living at the house the whole time. It was great. I got to know my brother and over that year we became really close. I hated it when he relapsed and left. A year is a long time to stay sober and I didn’t understand why he would go back to using after he managed to stay clean for so long. Finally, I understood that my brother used when he felt his life wasn’t in his control. Every little thing that didn’t go exactly right for him made him want to use and when he had multiple things not go the way he wanted it became much more likely that he’d relapse. My brother never wanted me to see him high and so I didn’t see much of him over those 5 years. Our parents found Serenity last year and it took everyone of use 4 months of talking to him about it for him to agree to go. It was such a good place for him to go. He’s done so many different programs and having a choice of programs was new for him and also needed. He needed a place that was different and Serenity delivered that. He loved the staff and how easy they were to get along with. They would put activities together for the patients and he always talked about the things that they had put together and how much fun they were. The best thing about Serenity was that whenever I talked to my brother he sounded happy. He talked a lot about the different classes and how much he liked going to them. The art and music therapy were two of the classes that he really enjoyed but that also really helped him. Every week he looked forward to going out with the other patients and having a day that was relaxing and fun. All those things together made him so much more committed to staying sober and he worked harder on his program because of it. It’s been 5 months since he came home and there’s a big difference between how he is now compared to how he was coming home from other programs. His attitude towards his sobriety is completely different. This time he’s actively working on staying sober. He goes to meetings, speaks with his aftercare specialist constantly and then actually does the things they talk about. He’s much more in control of his life now and when things don’t go exactly as he planned he doesn’t immediately want to use. He’s happier and isn’t just trying to stay sober, he’s setting goals for his life and actively working towards them.
